The spectrum of the main component of the Procyon system is analyzed on the basis of the high-quality Procyon Atlas (Griffin, 1979). Basic atmospheric parameters of this prominent object appear to be well-determined. The surface gravity is known with unusual accuracy, independent of spectroscopic analysis, and has the value log g = 4.0±0.1. Inconsistencies between this value and spectroscopic determinations of the surface gravity are investigated. It is shown that no simple model can convincingly explain these inconsistencies which are likely to occur in F type stars in general. Departures from LTE can account for at least part of the discrepancies. The author argues that fairly reliable abundances can be obtained using preferably weak lines and a model with a formal effective temperature of 6750K. Abundances of 28 elements are derived. The envelope of Procyon has essentially solar composition; substantial contamination with processed matter of the white dwarf progenitor can be excluded.
