A possible evolutionary scenario for the binary X-ray pulsar lE 2259+59
is suggested. In the framework of this scenario the observational
properties of the binary, the supernova remnant and the neutron star are
explained in a self-consistent manner, AM Her-like systems (polars) are
suggested to be possible progenitors of this class of X-ray pulsars.
