The transformation of star heliocentric coordinates from one epoch to another involves precession, nutation, and the apparent motion which is due to space motion in an inertial reference frame. Attention is presently given to a theory of the apparent heliocentric motion which handles both the perspective effects and the effects due to relativity in a rigorous fashion. The observational equivalents of the true (inertial) proper motion and radial velocity are derived, and the deviations of conventional astrometric methods from rigorous theory are studied for the case of a fictitious star. The theory is also applied to the case of very large space velocities, which yield the effects that have been proposed as a possible explanation for the superluminal velocities observed in the nuclei of active galaxies.
