Appalachian State University maintains a research and teaching observatory in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The Dark Sky Observatory (DSO) facility includes 16-inch and 18-inch telescopes that have been used for 15 years to acquire photometric data on eclipsing binaries, and for spectroscopy. Another 16-inch telescope is under development for automated photometry--it has seen first light and is being debugged. The main telescope is a DFM Engineering 32-inch which has been in operation for a year and a half. Research programs include CCD/pmt photometry of eclipsing binaries, spectroscopy of Lambda Boo stars, and CCD photometric monitoring of high-z QSO's. Research and education programs at DSO have been supported with grants from the National Science Foundation, the American Astronomical Society, the Fund for Astronophysical Research, and the Cottrell Research Corporation.
