A 'Hayashi Minimum Mass Solar Nebula' has about two Earth masses of rocky material between 2.2 and 4.0 AU; i.e., in the asteroid belt. Presently, the mass of the asteroid belt is estimated to be about 1,000 times less. The only body capabable of so efficiently excavating the asteroid belt is Jupiter. We suggest it did so early on, in the presence of the primitive solar nebula, via secular resonances, which moved through the asteroid belt as the nebula dissipated. This pumps up the eccentricities to the point where the asteroids collide with Jupiter, and also causes the smaller asteroids to spiral in because of gas drag.
