While the 3:1 commensurability in the planar elliptic three body problem has been extensively studied, it can still exhibit unexpected behavior. Direct integrations of the equations of motion reveal the existence of closed homoclinic loops attached to a periodic orbit. Near these loops the motion is chaotic but it also appears to be confined to branched invariant surfaces, namely double-tori.
