An elementary survey of the inflationary universe hypothesis is presented. The various cosmological problems impinged upon by a period of inflationary expansion are explained and conditions for their simultaneous resolution given. The unsolved problems of the cosmological constant and initial singularity are also discussed along with the new methodological problems raised by the use of inflation as a scientific explanation.
