A new determination has been made by us recently of the energy spectrum of the so-called diffuse extragalactic gamma radiation using CGRO data (Osborne et al. 1994JPhG...20.1089O). Detailed comparison of AGN data for both gamma rays and radio yields the conclusion that the bulk of the EG flux is due to unresolved AGN and the amount left for other processes seems to be very small indeed. Insofar as gamma rays are also generated by cosmic rays of the highest energy produced in extragalactic objects there are important conclusions to be drawn for the origin of these particles.
