Bl Lacertae Objects: General, Gamma Rays: Observation
Scientific paper
In the ``Revised and Updated Catalog of Quasi-Stellar Objects" of Hewitt & Burbidge (1993ApJS...87..451H), 90 sources are designated as BL Lacertae Objects. 11 of these 90 BL Lac objects have redshifts below 0.1, out of which EGRET has detected 3, while 13 of these 90 BL Lac objects have redshifts between 0.1 and 0.2, out of which EGRET has detected 2 more, during Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Compton Observatory's viewing programs. There seems to be a duty cycle of about 25% for EGRET to detect a close BL Lac object with redshift below 0.2. For the other close BL Lac objects which EGRET did not detect, co-adding of EGRET data also yields no detectable flux. These EGRET results are discussed in the paper.
