It is proposed that the main source of stellar wind and optical variability in the binary system Z CMa is the optical primary, rather than its so-called infrared companion. The higher polarization of the spectral lines compared to the continuum is interpreted as the result of Thomson scattering of the line radiation in the region where it forms, i.e., in the stellar wind.
