We introduce a semi-analytic method to calculate the redshift evolution of DA, the mean relative depression of quasar continuum between Ly-alpha and Ly-beta emission. We show that when the line distribution is normalized to satisfy the observed DA at certain zem, the DA evolution with redshift is largely determined by the intrinsic gammaint value, the evolutionary rate exponent, and is practically independent of other model parameters. When the uncertainty in DA normalization is reduced by future observations, this method will furnish a powerful tool for determining the gammaint value. We also point out that the apparent rest equivalent width distribution is not the intrinsic or physical distribution because of the blending effect. Confusing the two distributions leads to incorrect calculations of DA.
