Globular Clusters, Element Abundances

Scientific paper

This team has been conducting a 2.5Ang resolution spectroscopic survey of large samples of globular cluster stars using the 2dF multi-object spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian telescope. The majority of the stars lie on the main sequence below the cluster turnoffs. I will present results for the clusters NGC 6397 M55 NGC 6752 and 47 Tuc concentrating on CN and CH band strength variations and on results for the Na D lines. I will also review other spectroscopic studies of globular cluster main sequence stars and the constraints they imply for the origin of the abundance anomalies. A separate presentation (Stanford et al) will cover our results for the cluster Omega Centauri.
