We investigate the use of a combination of D_n and the surface brightness at D_n, SB_D, as an alternative distance indicator to the traditional Fundamental Plane. We show that, for r^1/4 intensity profile galaxies, a linear Fundamental Plane in logsigma-logr_e -SB_e space maps on to a plane in logsigma-logD_n -SB_D space, which is only slightly non-linear. We demonstrate for a sample of early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster that this new distance indicator is at least as accurate as the traditional Fundamental Plane method. Furthermore, this new Fundamental Plane variant has the very practical advantage that both photometric parameters can be determined by interpolation independently of any assumed intensity profile and hence the distance-dependent quantity can be determined in a very robust manner.
