Damped Lyman-Alpha Systems

Scientific paper

In the hierarchical bottom-up scenario for galaxy formation dwarf galaxies are the basic building blocks out of which larger galaxies are assembled. If this picture is correct it may be expected that when looking at the high redshift Universe a significant fraction of the galaxies are indeed dwarf galaxies. This should apply also to the observationally defined class of Damped Lyman alpha galaxies. Elemental abundance ratios may provide important clues in favour or against this hypothesis. Local Group dwarf galaxies may now be observed on a star by star basis and abundance ratios measured with sufficent accuracy to make a comparison with DLA abundances meaningful. In this contribution we report our recent results on the abundance ratios in the Sgr dwarf spheroidal. In particular we point to low alpha elemets to iron ratios even at relatively low metallicities which is reminiscent of what observed in many DLAs.
