Dense Stellar Systems

Scientific paper

Central nuclear star clusters are very common in late-type spiral galaxies; approximately80% of nearby systems contain such clusters. Central star clusters may be related to the formation of seed massive black holes and the secular build up of bulges. However very little is known about their physical properties including their ages chemical composition and mass. We present deep high-resolution spectra of nuclear star clusters to determine their internal velocity dispersions and virial masses and medium-resolution spectra to determine their stellar ages and metallicities. These fundamental parameters will help elucidate the nature of these objects and their relation to the global evolution of galaxies.
