The earth as a heat engine is examined, with emphasis on the lithosphere and developments in plate tectonics. The polarity of the earth's magnetic field is considered, as is the formation of the oceanic and (longer-lived) continental crusts. Convection and differential buoyancy in the earth's interior and radioisotopic dating of rocks are also discussed. In addition, attention is given to the geologic and atmospheric history of the moon, Mars and Venus.
