Photometric and spectroscopic observations of the old nova T Aur have been obtained with the 122-cm and the 182-cm reflectors of Asiago Observatory. The results indicate that T Aur fits the standard model for cataclysmic variables and that its physical properties at minimum light are very similar to those of the old nova DQ Her. The presence of a hot-spot at 0.85P is shown more strongly in He II emission line intensity variations than in broadband photometry. Since an absorption feature is seen around the He II emission, it is suggested that the disc is optically thick and brighter than the hot-spot. The orbital elements, derived from radial velocity variations are K1,=154 km s-1, γ = +50 km s-1, α1 sin i = 4.3 × 1010 cm. Making use of a simple analytical procedure, we obtain 0.68Msun as the mass of the primary and an orbital inclination of about 60°.
