A comparison with data on Venus, the earth, and moon shows the planet Mars to be in a state that is less active than that of the earth but more active than the moon. The aim of the present work was to determine the element composition of Martian surface rocks from gamma-radiation spectra measured with a scintillation gamma-spectrometer on board Mars 5. Some preliminary results of the investigation are examined.
