History Of Astronomy: Solar Eclipses, History Of Astronomy: Lunar Eclipses

Scientific paper

The second half of the fifteenth century marked the beginning of what was probably the greatest period of astronomical development in Europe before the modern era. For the first time, European astronomers began making careful astronomical observations and measurements, which led to the long-accepted astronomy of Ptolemy being seriously questioned for the first time. Two of the pioneers of astronomical observation were Regiomontanus and his student and associate Bernard Walther. Between them they made many hundreds of careful observations of the position of the Sun, Moon and planets. They also observed fifteen lunar and solar eclipses. These eclipse observations are subject of the present paper.
