Observations of high-redshift quasars by Baldwin (1977) indicate a strong correlation between the optical luminosity of these objects and the equivalent widths of several emission lines (the so-called 'Baldwin effect'). This paper discusses the Baldwin effect and demonstrates that the observed line-continuum relation has not been fully analysed in the past. It shows that the idea of massive accretion discs in the centre of active galaxies and quasars offers an immediate and simple (although not the only) explanation for the observed correlations. The author discusses the optical continuum and explains the implications of disc models and re-analyses the data in view of this. Other observed correlations in AGNs are discussed in particular the ratio of X-ray to optical to radio luminosities.
