Mike Collins, based in Everton, Bedfordshire, joined the UK Nova/Supernova Patrol and began a photographic search for novae in 1988. He followed the recommended method used by many since the patrol's formation in 1976, which involves the use of a 135mm telephoto lens on a mount which tracks the stars, always taking two frames of each area to eliminate flaws.
