Using Ringnes' data (1963, 1964) on the number of sunspot groups with an observed lifetime of 1 - 8 days in solar cycles 13 - 18, the relative frequency distribution density F(T) of sunspot groups with respect to the actual lifetime T has been studied taking into account the discreteness of observations (once per day). The relation of these results to the problem of two populations of sunspot groups, to the variations of F(T) with the phase of the 80-year cycle and to the accuracy of determining the frequency of formation of new sunspot groups f0 is discussed.
