Detailed spectrophotometric and photographic observations of the ring galaxy A0035 and its companions are analyzed. All the knots observed around the outer ring are shown to be relatively normal but exceedingly luminous H II regions photoionized by hot stars; radial velocities are determined for all these knots as well as for two of the companion galaxies. The dynamics, luminosities, and element abundances of the ring system are studied, yielding a Hubble distance of 150 Mpc, a ring diameter of 54 kpc, a nuclear mass of about 400 billion solar masses, and deficiencies of oxygen, nitrogen, and neon. The origin and evolution of the ring galaxy are discussed in terms of a galaxy-galaxy encounter whereby a transient ring develops after a companion galaxy has dropped right through a target disk galaxy on a trajectory almost normal to the disk and passing very close to its center. It is also suggested that the sweeping up of interstellar gas by the expanding ring led to rapid star formation and, consequently, to large numbers of OB stars and very luminous H II regions.
