Plausible hypotheses on the distribution of asteroids between Jupiter and Mars are considered. Periods of revolution, mean distance to sun, and Bode's law values are presented for major objects of the solar system. The distribution of asteroids is plotted as a function of average motion and semimajor orbit axis, and major resonances and gaps in the distribution are noted. The absence of asteroids at or beyond Jupiter's orbit is noted. The favored interpretation holds that asteroids with orbits of greater inclinations and eccentricities than now observed existed from the outset out to the Jovian orbit, with collisions with planets and Jovian perturbations emptying out some zones, and collisions between asteroids contributing further to produce gaps at resonances.
