Studies of mass motions and magnetic-field configurations on the sun are reviewed. The intensity of the photospheric magnetic field is estimated from photographs of the granulation network obtained during stratospheric flights, and the behavior of the H-alpha line in stratospheric spectrograms is compared with that of metallic lines and the continuum. H-alpha filtergrams are also used to discern the forms of elementary photospheric and chromospheric magnetic-field configurations. Long-wavelength shocks arising in solar flares are compared to terrestrial tsunamis, a dynamic model of sunspots is discussed which implies the presence of an azimuthal magnetic field in such features, and evidence is cited for continuous energy transfer to the chromosphere and corona by MHD waves propagating along sunspot magnetic-field lines. The nature of such large-scale structures as supergranules is considered.
