Scientific paper

The prospects for spaceborne infrared astronomy are considered. Studies
of the cosmic background radiation, investigations of the physics of the
interstellar medium and of external galaxies, and ionic line detection
are proposed. Technological developments such as heterodyne techniques
are discussed.
