The curve-of-growth technique is used to analyze the chemical composition and physical conditions in the shell of HR Del. Excitation and ionization temperatures are estimated along with the turbulence velocity and electron density in that shell. It is shown that the Stark effect governs the hydrogen absorption-line profiles and that the shell abundances of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen are anomalously high relative to the solar values. The distance of the nova is estimated to be 450 pc based on the interstellar Ca II K line, and an absolute magnitude of -4.85 is determined at maximum light. It is concluded that matter flowed continuously from the nova's surface during its premaximum stage and that the ejected matter amounted to 0.03 solar mass.
