A historical review of our four-dimensional, space-time Universe, from its hot dense phase (Big Bang) 15-20 billion years ago to its present expansion, is presented and the relationships between its properties and the presence of life is explored. The formation of protogalaxies from H and He lumps, and their evolution into galaxies are discussed together with the different phases of stellar life (protostar phase, main sequence phase, and the catastrophic collapse). The question of the existence of life supporting planets is reduced to the question of the duration of civilizations on those planets, and the importance of radio telescopes in discovering any nearby (several hundred parsecs away) civilization is stressed. The eight parameters (four microcosmic and four macrocosmic) deciding our Universe are discussed and their very narrow range for life supportability is pointed out and the possibility of the existence of other universes (most of them without life) with different values of the parameters, are considered.
