A pulsating low-pressure arc was the plasma source used to measure, on a shot-by-shot basis, the profiles of 5 lines of singly ionized fluorine and 15 lines of doubly ionized chlorine. An electron density of 5.8 by 10 to the 16th power per cu cm was determined by laser interferometry, while an electron temperature of 24,200 K was deduced from a Boltzmann plot of relative intensities of Cl III lines. The experimental F II and Cl III Stark-profile half-widths were compared with the values calculated by using various approximations of the semiclassical theoretical approach.
