The observed transition from the Balmer continuum and line spectrum, especially the absence of a sharp Balmer jump, was accounted for by means of a detailed analysis of the spectrum-forming mechanisms. Two crucial steps in the analysis were the derivation of the recombination continuum on the basis of the statistical distribution of ionization energies, and the application of dissolution to the sum of spectral-line profiles. The total calculated spectrum compares satisfactorily with the laboratory-observed spectrum of an equilibrium source. The ion densities were between 10 to the 16th and 10 to the 17th power per cu cm, and temperatures were around 10,000 K.
