It is shown that equilibrium magnetic rope configurations stable over several Alfven times can exist in inhomogeneous external fields. The model of a uniformly twisted force-free magnetic tube is used to analyze the problem of transfer of field torsion along the axis of a magnetic rope which is weakly inhomogeneous along its length. It is shown that when allowance is made for the length of the perturbed section of the rope the H-psi field can be transferred from a wider to narrower part of the tube. The field torsion reaches a maximum at the top of the loop in accordance with Parker's (1979) conclusion. The dynamics of the ascent of a thin magnetic loop in an external potential field is investigated with allowance for the possible transfer of torsion to the top of the loop.
