We present an outline of the main motivations, goals, procedures, and
first scientifiic results of a dedicated astrometric program aimed at
determining trigonometric parallaxes for new nearby (D < 25) stars in
the Southern sky. This program is being carried out at the Cerro Tololo
Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), Chile.
