We propose to obtain GMOS/Gemini long-slit spectra of ten MgII absorption selected galaxies to measure their rotation curves and compare the galaxy kinematics with the MgII absorbing gas kinematics in their extended halos. All ten galaxies are confirmed to be at the same redshift as the absorbing gas. We have in hand WFPC-2/HST images and HIRES/Keck and/or UVES/VLT quasar spectra of the MgII absorption for each galaxy/absorber. We have modeled the galaxy morphologies, and measured the quasar-galaxy impact parameters, galaxy sky orientations, and position angles of their major axes with respect to the quasars. We have measured the MgII kinematics using Voigt profile fitting and have quantified the number of clouds and their velocities and column densities, and measured the velocity spreads and asymmetries. We plan to increase our sample to ~ 50 over the next few years (we have 38 in hand now). The proposed data will allow us to place the absorption gas kinematics on an absolute scale relative to the galaxies. Since we know the galaxy orientations, we know the line of sight path through the galaxies. We therefore will be able to compare and model the halo and galaxy kinematics with unprecedented detail. The proposed data will also be used to constrain the stellar populations of the galaxies. Our long term goal is to examine if extended halo gas at intermediate redshifts is dynamically coupled to the galaxies and/or correlated with their properties.
