The ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) have generated great interest because they may be intermediate-mass black holes. We propose to obtain a good quality optical spectrum of the ULX with the brightest unique optical counterpart. The spectrum will help us determine the spectral type of the companion and constrain the motion of material close to the compact object. This observation should lead to a significant advance in our understanding of ULXs.
