On-board processing of signals in a communications satellite will become a reality soon. To meet the needs of high capacity system, new technologies are being developed, and one of the most recent is the system known as time-division multiple-access, satellite-switched (TDMA/SS) which is suitable for multiple spot beam zones. Since TDMA is employed, it is necessary to synchronize all the time system of the earth station with a common reference, which, in this case, needs to be related to the Sync window of the satellite. In the 1970s, a number of papers focused on the synchronization for this system. In this paper, the various techniques that have been proposed are described and compared to each other briefly, and the characteristics are analysed.
