In the investigation reported particular attention is given to the transformation of the current patterns from the growth phase to the recovery phase. The existence of two different types of substorm development is proposed. The first type is characterized by the two-vortex current system in the polar cap with two auroral electrojets of about equal intensity. The intensity of this current system increases until the explosive phase begins. The other type does not seem to be characterized by any distinct current system during the growth phase.-
