The Skylab mission provided a unique opportunity for the direct study of the sun by man from a vantage point above the earth's atmosphere. The observations made by the astronauts with the aid of the Skylab instruments were coordinated with the efforts of some 150 solar observers on the ground in 17 countries. The solar investigations conducted include studies of the corona, determinations of the sun's magnetic fields on the basis of X-ray observations, and the investigation of solar storms. One of the photographs presented shows a solar eruption of gigantic dimensions.
