It has been suggested by Stecker and Frost (1973) that gamma-ray bursts may originate in magnetic white dwarfs. A possible mechanism for the development of convective instabilities in white dwarfs is proposed. It is found that as a white dwarf with a strong, irregular magnetic field cools, convective instabilities may develop in different regions of the star at various times, giving rise in some cases to gamma-ray events.
