The number of intergalactic gas clouds is estimated from the absorption lines observed in quasar spectra. A calculation of the probability for the development of ring structures through collisions with intergalactic clouds indicates that such collisions, like mutual collisions of galaxies, are incapable of accounting for even a small fraction of the ring galaxies observed.
