A numerical MHD model for the interaction between Venus and the solar wind is presented which takes into account the loading of the solar wind by ions produced during the photoionization of the hot oxygen corona in the transition region between the shock front and the ionopause. Calculations of the front location and the properties of the solar wind behind the front are compared with Pioneer-Venus data and with other calculations which do not take the loading effect into account. It is shown that the loading effect makes possible a consistent explanation of the main features of solar-wind flow past Venus.
