A decomposition technique for the simultaneous determination of SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, and MgO as well as for the continuous analysis of ferrous and total iron in the presence of O-phenanthroline hydrate is described. The determination of the six components requires only one 5 mg sample. The first four compounds are determined by colorimetric techniques after the sample is fused with alkali and then treated with acid. O-phenanthroline hydrate, added to the sample as it is decomposed in a closed container, prevents the oxidation of ferrous iron. The analytic method is recommended for the analysis of olivine and pyroxene separates from the meteorite.
