To calculate the attitude and other data of sounding rockets, computer programs for evaluating telemetry data were developed and successfully applied to the German ASTRO-7, Winteranomalie, Polare Hochatmosphare, and ARIES projects. First, the current measurement-time is allocated to the pitch, yaw, and roll telemetry data coming from an inertial platform and, occasionally, a three-axial magnetometer. Then, these data are scaled to physical values and smoothed via selectable time periods and selectable-degree polynomes. Possible measuring or telemetry errors can be eliminated by setting suitable bounds. The smoothed values are provided in settable time intervals for calculating attitude and additional data, and processed in line with the experimenter specifications. Some of the problems likely to arise from this data processing are briefly discussed.
