The increased performance of sounding rockets, following the introduction of the Raven 11 motor in 1975, is reviewed. The apogee range available varies from 150 km for Skylark 5 to 1000 km for Skylark 12. Skylark 14 can provide over 8 minutes useful flight under microgravity conditions. The Raven 11/Snipe combination can attain an altitude of over 650 km with a small payload (260 mm in diameter, 70 kg mass).
