Wide-angle photographs of our galaxy reveal the fine structure of the
arms 0, -I and -II. The axis of each spiral arm shows a characteristic
pattern b = b(1), which may be used for statistical distance
determinations. The mean deviation of spiral tracers from the arm axis
decreases with decreasing wavelength and is only 12 per cent at 2900 A.
