Results of a model atmosphere analysis and non-LTE treatment of He I lines in the optical spectrum of β Lyr primary as well as calculations of theoretical spectra are presented and discussed. Among the major conclusions are the following: (1) As a direct consequence of the CNO cycle, a significant helium overabundance in the atmosphere is found, He/H = 1.0; nitrogen is also overabundant. (2) A good agreement between observed and synthetic spectra is obtained for line profiles of other elements - Mg, Si, S, Ti, Cr, Fe and Ni, assuming normal abundances; the same is valid also for Ne, allowing for departures from LTE. (3) The appearance of some resonance lines suggests influence from a circumstellar envelope; here, an approximate non-LTE approach (also for some Si II lines) gave better agreement between observed and predicted profiles. These results are consistent over large parts of the (optical) spectrum.
