The use of balloons in the field of high energy astrophysics is reviewed. Hard X-ray and soft gamma ray astronomy, midrange and high energy gamma ray astronomy, and the study of cosmic radiation are discussed. The scientific objectives include the discovery of sources emitting in these ranges, the study of the large scale variability of the sources by long flights, and the study of the diffuse component, its spectrum and its anisotropy. The most significant results obtained by balloon experiments are listed.
