The contributions that Friedman and Lemaitre made to an understanding of the nonstatic nature of the universe and its evolution are surveyed. Their ideas are examined in the context of modern cosmology. Post-Friedmanian and post-Lemaitrian concepts of the evolution of the universe are discussed and, to a certain extent, contrasted. The impact of the two innovators on the development of the standard model of the universe is considered.
