Direct CCD images and long-slit spectrograms of the peculiar system 623+71 have been obtained. 623+71 is a cataclysmic binary surrounded by a faint emission nebula which has a bow-shocklike structure. The dimensions of the nebula are about 105 arcsec both in the east-west and south-north directions. Electron densities in the nebula are between 100 and 250/cu cm. Emission line ratios show that shock wave heating and photoionization contribute to the excitation of the nebula. The observations do not support an interpretation of 623+71 as an old nova shell which has been ejected during an eruption some time ago. A planetary nebula nature would have important implications for the evolution of cataclysmic binaries. Evidence for such a nature is the strong morphological similarity with the peculiar planetary nebula Abell 35. A third explanation is that the nebula was formed by an interaction of a stellar wind with the surrounding interstellar medium. Stellar winds of cataclysmic binaries during active phases would be strong enough to form such an interstellar bubble.
