The problem of the dynamical mass excess in clusters of galaxies is examined in the framework of Weyl's geometry. A previous study of the concept of metrical connection and its consequences for the geodesic equation and the Newtonian approximation of the equation of motion is briefly reviewed, the approximation applicable to clusters of galaxies is discussed, and an energy integral is obtained for a system of points. Mass determination is considered, and it is shown that the existence of a nontrivial metrical connection in spacetime could significantly alleviate the difficult problem of dynamical mass excess in extended configurations. The analysis is applied to internal motions in the Coma cluster, using radial velocities for 102 galaxies in that cluster. The results indicate that the present theory can account for a large part, if not all, of the discrepancy between dynamical and visible masses. It is suggested that the mass discrepancy for gravitational configurations becomes larger as the mean density of the system decreases.
