An observational program for the determination of precise positions of the optical counterparts of extragalactic radio sources in the FK 4 system has been started. Results from a pilot program concerning 17 sources in the Northern Hemisphere are reported. Secondary reference stars are obtained with a 23-cm astrograph. About 50-80 faint reference stars with apparent visual magnitudes of 12 to 14 have been selected for each field covering an area of 1 x 1 deg centered at the source position. The internal mean error of the derived source positions is better than 0.1 arcsec. A comparison of the optical data with the corresponding radio positions shows that the zero points of the (practically independent) optical and radio declination system could be determined with a mean error of 0.004 sec.
